* TERLINGUA — The 20th annual Black Eyed Pea Off will be on Jan. 1, 2011, an appropriate day to prepare and eat lucky black-eyed peas. All the activities will take place at the porch and parking lot of the Terlingua Ghost Town. There will be games for kids with prizes, a cake walk/auction (donated cakes are needed), live music and a celebrity “arrest” with raised bail money going to the cause. This event raises money for the Terlingua Common School District’s Activity Fund. Turn-in time for the peas is 2 p.m. sharp, with a $5 entry fee, which is used for prize money. There are two rules: Have fun! No beans! Entrants may cook on site or off, just deliver peas to the judges hot. For $5, the dining public gets a bowl, spoon and a piece of cornbread, to go around a taste the peas. The music starts at 2 p.m. and goes until dark. Come join us to get your lucky bowl of black-eyed peas, and a fun party to start the year off right. For more information, contact Pam Ware at 432-371-3156 or 432-371-2485.

Misc.

* The city storage yard on Cemetery Road offers bulky items disposal days on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Instead of leaving bulky trash next to neighborhood dumpsters (which is illegal), Alpine residents may take those big items — such as mattresses, coils of wire, brush, furniture, non-working water heaters, old car batteries and tires — to the storage yard located next to the Hal Flanders Recycling Center. This program is not for commercial use. Alpine residents must present a driver’s license and utility bill. Leave recyclables at the Recycling Center and bulky trash at the city yard. For more information, call Texas Disposal Systems at 432-837-0845
* Don’t throw those light bulbs in the trash! Do you have burned-out CFL (compact fluorescent light) bulbs? You can recycle those at the Rio Grande Electric Cooperative office, 2501 N. Hwy. 118 in Alpine. Why not toss them in the trash? These CFLs contain a small amount of mercury that, if improperly disposed of, can present a hazard to the environment. Rio Grande Electric Co-op has joined with the Environmental Protection Agency to help reduce pollution from CFL bulbs.
* Alpine Lions Club meets at noon each Tuesday at the Longhorn Steakhouse, 805 N. 5th. All Lions are encouraged to attend, and the public is welcome. For more information, call Bob Cullins at 432-837-8049 or 837-2297.
* The Alpine Farmer’s Market is open at 9 a.m. Saturdays at two locations — Old Town Plaza at 5th Street and Sul Ross, and outside Big Bend Thrift Store at 5th Street and Avenue A.
* Lap-Sit Story Time meets at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in the Junior Room of the Alpine Public Library. Children ages 5 and under will participate in stories, finger plays, singing and craft projects. For more information, call the library at 432-837-2621.
* The Friends of the Marathon Public Library meet at 11 a.m. each Wednesday for “Toddler Time” stories and crafts. The library has just received more than 100 new easy readers and board books, thanks to funding from the TexasReads program. For more information, call Carol Townsend at 432-386-4136.
* St. James Episcopal Church, North 6th Street and Avenue A, has started a Sunday school class for children ages 4-12. The class meets at 11 a.m. Sundays. All children are welcome. For more information, call Nancy Antrim at 432-837-1389.
* The Marathon Branch of the Alpine Public Library offers an outreach program for patrons unable to visit the library because of physical limitations. Call Carol Townsend at 432-386-4136 to arrange for book deliveries to homebound residents in Marathon.
* A confidential peer-to-peer support group for combat veterans and family members is hosted by combat veterans at 7 p.m. each 1st and 3rd Monday at the Alpine Community Center. There is no cost to participants and no VA reporting. For more information, call Steve Cree, Veterans Outreach Specialist, at 432-770-7469.
