Big Bend Snips and Snaps August 6, 2009

–Alpine, Texas is one of the 20 best places to live according to Outside magazine. Click here to read that article.

–Big respect to Christine and Victor Noriega. I attended a party at their rental property. Casa Vida is great! Check it out on VRBO. Also, they are supporting local poetry by having a verse/standup oriented open mike. The first one was on the 1st and by all accounts was great. The only reason I didn’t go? Friday night poker 🙂

–A friend sent me this picture of a sign outside a store, supposedly taken by his sister in Maine. See, people, it’s not just Texans who mix firearms and high fashion together!

–A strange site has recently come to my attention. Click here to visit West Texas Police State, an anonymous venue to discuss law enforcement out here in West Texas. I have read a little about this issue in the local paper (many of the letters, though, because they were anonymous were not printed.) What are my readers thoughts on this? E-mail or comment to let me know.

–My poll results show that you want more local video and photography. Are you a local photographer looking for an audience? Send me a picture or a link to your Flickr account!

–In the Department of Trivial Pursuits I have made an amazing discovery: Van Halen had a contract with their venues that forbade the use of brown M&Ms. Read about this at

–A reader sent in this heartbreaking story of a 76 year-old-man who was tasered while riding his antique tractor. The police in Wyoming sound harsh, man.

Yacht have sort of claimed Marfa as their own (after one show?)– click here to read a review of “See Mystery Lights”.

–I have also recently heard that Sul Ross is once again housing people at Mountainside dormitory despite the money and time that have gone into building the expansive Lobo Village. Can any students out there confirm or deny this for me?

–Does anyone know who took this picture? It appears to be Kinky Friedman in South County somewhere with a lovely lady. A reader sent it in after finding it on the internet but didn’t know when, where or with whom it was taken.

–My quote of the week? From the immortal Steely Dan: “Now your patrons have all left you in the red/ Your low rent friends are dead.”

–Here’s a fun video someone took of Gallery Night here in Alpine:

— David De La O sent in some information on an exciting theatre event:

My friends and I have started Savage Animal Productions. The plays we will be putting on are Lone Star written by James McClure and Countdown written by Andrew Ross, one of the founding members of Savage Animal Productions. The plays will be performed in Terlingua, TX on August 6 though August 9. Starting time will be 9:00 pm. The plays will take place behind the store, thats what the place is called, but for those who are not familiar with the area it is on the way to the Terlingua Ghost Town and will be on the left hand side. Both plays will have adult language. Admission for the plays is $5.00. Run time for the night will be about an hour and a half, including a 15 minute intermission. Drinks will be available at the concessions. We hope that people from the area will come support us and have a fun time in the process. Anyone with questions can call me David DeLaO at 432-557-3116.

— I want to give a big thank you to my contributing editors Matt Hodges and Amanda Mayo. Amanda may be moving back here to the Trans-Pecos area… I, for one, am looking forward to her return.
