Marfa is full of fantastic restaurants, magnificent art galleries and diverse gift shops, but the abundance of unique lodging options make it the perfect place to set-up camp as you explore West Texas.
Historic Marfa Hotels
Many of Marfa’s most desired hotels have been accommodating guests for decades. The Hotel Paisano and the Thunderbird Hotel are the two most historically significant options in the city.
Rich in culture, The Hotel Paisano opened for business in the 1930’s and was the lodging choice of the cast and crew of the epic film “Giant,” including James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson. This lavishly appointed hotel offers 33 guest rooms and suites, a full-service bar and restaurant, an indoor swimming pool, a gift shop and a relaxing reading room. The hotel was meticulously restored to its’ original splendor when new owners acquired it 2001. The Hotel Paisano also offers a grand ballroom that will seat up to 125 people for meetings, receptions or other special events.
The Thunderbird Hotel is perfect for guests that want to stay in a historical building with all of the modern amenities expected today. The T-Bird offers contemporary furnishings and minimalist styling in a classic 1950’s horseshoe shape. Locally run since 1959, this chic lodging option features 24 guest rooms, a pool and an outdoor fireplace. Rates start at $120 per night and vary according to the time of year.
Modern Marfa Lodging Options
Several hotels have opened in Marfa in recent years that mix big city styling with the laid back attitude of this dusty small town.
El Cosmico is definitely one of the most eclectic lodging options in the area. Guests are invited to stay in renovated trailers, primitive yurts, authentic teepees and classic tents. The “guest rooms” at El Cosmico are unusual, but the amenities that are offered on this 18-acre plot of land are even more original. A bathhouse, hammock grove, outdoor kitchen and Dutch tubs are available to guests. El Cosmico hosts several events each year, including culinary weekends and the Trans-Pecos Festival of Music and Love.
Stay Marfa is a restored adobe building that offers six distinctive apartments to guests. Identified by the color of the door, each apartment features IKEA-inspired furnishings and contemporary art work. Guest rooms offer 100% cotton sheets, natural shampoo and conditioner and Wi-Fi access. The Fuchsia Door, Yellow Door, Cobalt Door and Violet Door offer full kitchens and patios.
