–Update: A very big thank you to the editors and readers at Blogged.com. Out of eleven travel-themed blogs concerning the state of Texas, West Texas Weekly is rated number one.Click here to see those results.
– Interested in off-the-grid living? A couple in the Chihuahuan Desert down across the border are getting national attention for their committment to renewable energy. Click here to read their blog. Treehugger describes their project: “Abe and Josie have the smarts to survive well in the big city, but they have chosen a different life, a remote life, off grid, debt free, and on their own terms and timeline.” Treehugger is an interesting online resource for renewable energy.
–I’m looking forward to the Alpine Chamber of Commerce Mixer tonight. It’s at six at Farmers Insurance here in Alpine. Bake Turner will be playing his guitar there, and for folks who don’t know, Bake has a Superbowl ring there on his strumming hand.
–I was lucky enough to walk in on an amazing photo session that Lesley Slanning was doing with my good friends Robin Lombaria and Mercer Black. As you can see, Robin looks amazing. Click here to see some photos of Romi taken in Marfa.
– A very big thank you to Guil of La Loma Del Chivo. If you are from out of town and looking for a place to trade labor for lodging, contact this place. You’ll get to work an organic garden or assist with many different renewable energy projects.
–From the Texas Mountain Trail Writers: “The Texas Mountain Trail Writers will hold their first fall meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the Hallmark Townhouses Fiesta Room in Alpine. – This blog has a compelling and unique premise: write a secret on a postcard and send it in anonymously.Click here to read PostSecret.
–A gigantic thank you to Jimmy Patterson of the Midland Reporter Telegram. He wrote about me for the paper. Click here to read the article. He also hosts the excellent blog Sticky Doorknobs. Thanks for a great interview, Jimmy!
– Congratulations to my Contributing Editor Marfa, Amanda Mayo. She will be the new office manager for KRTS, Marfa Public Radio. I predict that she will be a strong, competent asset to the station. I know that she has been a tremendous asset to West Texas Weekly.
I have been a great fan of this radio station since day one. My especially memorious (this word is setting off my spell checker, but it’s used in the title of a Borges short story) readers realize that I wrote an article for the defunct Desert Candle on KRTS many moons ago. Maybe I’ll reprint it here one of these days…
– Marfa Film Festival is now accepting submissions for the 2010 festival. Click here to visit their great website. I’ll be helping the volunteers with social media this year.
– I want to give a gigantic ‘you rock!!!’ to Tina, Yvonne, Christy, David Beebe, Lena, Bennie and the rest of the staff at Padre’s. Friday night they were absolutely swamped because of the Marfa Lights Festival but they fought back and survived the night. It seemed like the whole town of Marfa was there ordering drinks at the same time.
I spent most of my time drinking a delicious Long Island Ice Tea and talking to Adrian Amiro and Elise Easley. Adrian popped into town to sell her beautiful jewelry at a booth before going to France for an internship. Good luck, Adrian! Click here to see the interview I conducted with Adrian about being an intern at Chinati.
It was also a great treat to see Drew Stuart. He’s doing well at his journalism gig in Del City. It sounds like he is getting a little less social stimulation than he did in Marfa. Which is why this song from ‘Drew Aid’ is getting a repeat airing:
– I also want to give a big thank you to Rusty Kaim and her close friend Charlotte, two of the great aeronauts who were generous enough to give me a ride in Confetti. After my inaugural flight, I kneeled down on a blanket there in the Sierra La Rana polo field while the ladies baptized me with confetti and water and said the Balloonist’s Prayer: “The winds have welcomed you with softness/ The sun has blessed you with his warm hands/ You have flown so high and so free/ That God has joined you in laughter/ And set you gently again/ Into the loving arms of Mother Earth.” After that touching moment, we clinked glasses full of mimosa and ate some coffee cake. I felt like Toad of Toad Hall. Ballooning is fun! Click here to see learn more about the Central Texas Ballooning Association. Click here to see my ride in Confetti.
I received a strong, positive impression from the people I met at the Balloon Bash… I think, compared to many other hobbies, that ballooning cultivates humility and industry. You may need a crew of eight people to put a balloon up, but only two people can fit in the gondola. For that reason, it attracts people who don’t mind being part of the team and working on a team effort.
Big kudos to all the folks at Sierra La Rana for bringing these people out here.
–Ralph McKay is doing a great job with the new Monday Night Movies at the Marfa Book Company. These show at 7 pm sharp (7:30 temporarily because of long sunny days) for free each Monday. This week’s film was Running Stumbled. Stop by the Marfa Book Company for more information, or check in here at West Texas Weekly.

–Elbert Bassham sent me the results for the 10k:
“There was a very good turnout with 39 runners competing in the 10K race and 35 runners competing in the 5K race. Racers competed with each other in Male/Female and in Age Group categories. There were two hotly contested categories with a study of the photos needed to resolve the contests. Natalia Williams and Martha Silva tied with a photo finish for Overall Female with a time of 0:41:04 for the distance of 5K (3.1 miles). Catherine Rodriguez edged ahead of Lisa Muniz to win 2nd place for Females age 25-29 also for the distance of 5K. Click for more…
–What a busy weekend! Fort Davis National Historic Site will have lots of exciting stuff this weekend. I’m interested in the the baseball game played by 1884 rules. Also there will be a Trash Can Cavelry presentation and a small arms demonstration. Click here to find out more. This is part of the Kate Hoffman Art Association’s Sixth Annual Juried Art Show.

Sul Ross continues to have crop after crop of talented kids. Click here to join the MSRC Facebook fan club. Stop by the MSRC here in Alpine and check out this art.
–If you’re interested in the mysterious (perhaps supernatural?) meet James Bunnell (former NASA Engineer) who conducted an 8 year investigation that resulted in his new book “Hunting Marfa Lights.” There will also be a video presentation and discussion to follow. This is at 2 pm on Saturday at the Apache Trading Post in Alpine.
–German artist Barbel Helmert will host a new show, “Lost+Found” at the Greasewood Gallery at the Hotel Paisano. An artist’s reception will be held at 6 to 8 pm on Friday at 207 N. Highland in Marfa.

–Thank you to all sponsors who have renewed their sponsorship! An extra big thank-you to Dona Ward, my insurance agent and a integral part of the small business community here in Alpine. If you own a small business like me, knowing the full range of options regarding insurance and financial planning is a must.Click here for a free rate quote.
–In regard to the website West Texas Police State, I received the following e-mail from Guilford Jones: “I think it’s a great site to monitor the doings of the agencies charged with serving and protecting us. It appears to me that these law enforcement deputies and others are still drunk with the power ostensibly given to them by the patriot act. Having a public forum to discuss and chronicle their actions is invaluable, somebody has to push back!”
– Thank you to Anne Schroeder Mullins for linking to my video at Politico.
– Dan Gallo, author of this excellent post on Daily Kos had this to say about West Texas Weekly: “Thanks so much! We’ve been enjoying your online paper and find it very well done indeed, with a level of editing seldom seen in the Big Bend. Thanks for setting up the link. It’s very odd to realize how many Big Benders there must be on Kos–so much for web anonymity.”
–If you’re interested in seeing some great local photography, stop by and see Chavez Photography at Shutterfly. I had a great time working with Roxy there at the Alpine Avalanche. Be sure to check out this site for photos of Homecoming and the Alpine Bucks (see above).
–One of the most fun parties of the year is about to happen. Glen Felts of La Kiva let me know about it: “The 17th Annual Mad Hatters Party will feature La Tampiquena plus the Doodlin’ Hogwallops on Sept. 19th, Saturday. $50 cash to the best hat! No cover charge.”
–Jose Aguayo let me know that lots of local folks are potentially going to have to pay the insurance and taxes on their mortgages twice. The Wall Street debacle affects us even here out in West Texas. Click here to read more. If you received a mortgage from West Texas National Bank, you may want to double-check what’s going on.
– Robert Halpern of the Big Bend Sentinel let me know about the Bechtel Grant Recipients:
BREWSTER, JEFF DAVIS, PRESIDIO counties – Twenty-two Sul Ross State University students from Brewster, Jeff Davis and Presidio counties are recipients of a Bechtel Fund book grant in the amount of $300 each for the fall 2009 semester. This semester’s award totals $6,600.

–Scrubbing the internet I came across this video of Sonic Youth at the final Chinati Open House. I attended it with my good friend Shauna Crawford. Excellent show!
–A big thank you to everybody who helped organize the poker tournament at the American Legion here in Alpine. I came in second and won a beautiful new grill from Morrison’s True Value. First prize was a big screen TV from Big Canyon Satellite.
– I am dismayed at how divisive the GOP has been recently. After eight years of deficit spending and tax cuts from the Bush administration, things are falling apart in Washington. How can you blame it on a president who hasn’t even passed a budget yet? Be patient. A Marine General/National Security Advisor credits Obama with tracking down more terrorists than Bush.
– The Holland Hotel is looking nice. It has gotten a new coat of plaster on its front. I am looking forward to seeing the new re-modeled interior.
– Kudos to Mercer Black and her Camp Marfa foodstuffs. They’re available at Marfa Farm Stand.
– Where do I advertise? I underwrite at Marfa Public Radio. I also advertise with the Cenizo Journal. These are two of the great independent media outlets out here (Happy upcoming birthday to Wendy Lynn Wright of the Cenizo!).
–I can’t get enough of the burgers at Alicia’s Cafe. I always get a cheeseburger with a side order of chili macho. The hand-cut french fries are amazing. If you’re just stopping in town for the first time and want really authentic Alpine food, come in.
– A reader just alerted me that there is a wildfire east of Fort Davis that has consumed 150 acres of vegetation. Stay tuned for updates.
– Johanna Nelson, the City Council Rep. for Ward 2, will be hosting a public forum at the Neighborhood Center, August 22nd. The Neighborhood Center is located at 607 W Avenue Gallego. The Neighborhood Center will be open from 3-6pm on Saturday. For more information, please contact 432-837-5736
–West Texas has little lulls… until the Jazz Festival and Labor Day things seem a little calm.
– Be sure to stop by the Raspa Company tonight at 9 pm to see Silent Land Time Machine. There’s some great new merchandise there too.
Big Bend Balloon Bash
– Big Bend Balloon Bash is going to be great this year. I spoke to Gil Barthee and he will try to get my contributing editor Amanda Mayo up for a video shoot of a balloon ride. Also, I am very happy to welcome Amanda back to West Texas. She is a talent and destined to do some great stuff.
– The Texas Health Commission is urging West Texas ranchers to get their cattle vaccinated after a confirmed case in Crocket county:
“The Texas drought has added insult to injury, as anthrax has been confirmed in a cow that died in Crockett County. Anthrax bacteria can lie dormant in soil for years, until hot, dry weather conditions trigger the bacteria’s germination. Livestock and wildlife can pick up the bacteria as they crop the grass close to the soil. Once they ingest the bacteria, cattle, sheep, goats, horses, deer and other grazing animals can become ill and die within hours. ” Click here to read the rest of that press release.
“This young male black bear had been hanging around the parking lot and the restaurant area of the Chisos Mountain Lodge in Big Bend National Park on Monday AM … He actually came back to the window 2 or 3 times. When he started to stand on his hind legs and push on the windows (we could see them buckling) that’s when we all decided to stand back and I stopped filming. ”
– I am hearing about bears all the time. To the uninitiated, we do have black bears out here in the Big Bend. One was found dead here near Alpine recently. Click here to read about that in Mike Perry’s Alpine Avalanche. My good friend Mercer Black has a funny story where her mother feeds a baby bear apples on the side of the road. My good friend Carrie Koennecke did her graduate project on the presence of black bears in the Davis Mountains.
–Update: This is an amazing site. Tony Trischka teaches banjo. It’s amazing how the Internet is affecting folk culture!
– We’ve been experiencing amazing thunderstorms and electrical outages. I heard the cell tower in Fort Davis went out as well due to a lightning strike.
–Visit Big Bend, one of the best local websites, has gotten a face lift. Stop by and check out their new resources for the online community. They’ve gotta be good– they’re linking to me!
–My friend Spencer Anderson is looking for work. He’s a young, intelligent guy who has been working for a local hotel that suffered economic setbacks. If you have a job in the hospitality industry for Spencer, drop me a line.
–To see more of my favorite video, links and news click here. E-mail me at andrewsuber@hotmail.com.
Update: From Texas Highways: “Oh, yes, and a trip to West Texas, where you can escape summer’s blaze in unlikely places. Perhaps you’re thinking the mercury has gone to my head, and that I’m confused, or worse, clearly crazy. But bear with me: West Texas boasts two of the most pleasant places to hang out in the throes of summer–fantabulous Balmorhea State Park, where the crystalline waters of San Solomon Springs hover around 74 degrees year round, and the Davis Mountains, where temperatures dip into the 60s at night and the stars emerge big and bright.”
– I have a dedicated reader who sends in at least one LOLcat a week. Here is her current favorite:
Update: Johanna Nelson, the City Council Rep. for Ward 2, will be hosting a public forum at the Neighborhood Center, August 22nd. The Neighborhood Center is located at 607 W Avenue Gallego. Everyone is invited to stop by and to discuss community issues and concerns. Residents of Alpine are especially encouraged to attend and exchange ideas on how we can make the City of Alpine a better place to live. The Neighborhood Center will be open from 3-6pm on Saturday. Light refreshments will be available. For more information, please contact 432-837-5736 or email: johanna.nelson@yahoo.com.
– Jose Aguayo reminds me that:
” Come to Sul Ross on Thursday (tomorrow) and meet the four presidential candidates. If you care about the Big Bend, you should make time. It’s at 5-6:30 p.m. at the Espino Conference Center in the University Center. Link to schedule – http://www.sulross.edu/pages/6794.asp”
–I spoke with Phyllis Dunham (a wonderful and talented woman) last weekend about being my Contributing Editor Events. So, start looking out for her take on local events. I am assembling a great staff: Matt Hodges, Amanda Mayo and Phyllis Dunham are wonderful people that I am very lucky to work with. Blogging is the new thing in media and these folks are getting first-hand experience.
–As everybody knows, I am assisting Hugh McLoed with Stormhoek. Stormhoek is a South African wine that Hugh is introducing out here in West Texas. I shot the following video of that process at the Grub Shack in Terlingua:

– Margaret Cotter, the winner of the last photography contest sent in some new entries and let me know this:
“Margaret Cotter here with my entries….I LOVED my meal (and treating 3 friends) at Mural Cafe!!
I now have a new favorite place to eat in Alpine!!!”

–A fan sent in the following picture taken by Charles Smith. This pleasant little javelina walked into the Chuckwagon in Fort Davis. Evidently, he just pushed open the screen door and entered nonchalantly as patrons ate their brisket plates.
–A fan of the site sent in this:
“Love your site!
Has anyone sent you the interviews David Lynch did out that way (Fort Davis and Marfa)?
These just posted on his site this month:”
I want to thank that reader for the tip and I also want to laud Mr. Lynch for taking an interest in everyday life throughout America. These interviews are an important chronicle of how real people live their lives.
–I want to thank Robert Halpern of the Big Bend Sentinel for alerting me to this:
Attention high school graduates from Brewster, Jeff Davis and Presidio counties:

Also, Jose is helping Sul Ross students do what I do– explore the new world of Web 2.0. He just purchased a HD video camera, so look out for more Sul Ross video here on West Texas Weekly.
–Thank you to the reader who sent in this picture of a cute puppy.
–Also, big thanks to Joe Nick Patoski for his involvement in the Way Out West Texas book festival and his turn on the wheels of steel at KRTS. I listened to his one-off radio show and enjoyed it immensely.

Marfa Public Radio (KRTS, 93.5 FM) is pleased to welcome three summer interns to the station.
David Leonnig, Tracy Maline, and Rebecca Potts will spend this summer assisting station activities, producing radio programming, and learning first-hand how a community-supported, noncommercial radio station operates.
Leonnig is a first year graduate student in the Arts & Technology Program at the University of Texas at Dallas. He’ll be involved in increasing the radio station’s web presence, including the use of new media.
Maline grew up in the area, and is a graduate of Fort Davis High School. This May, she received her Associates Degree in Sound Technology from South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. Maline’s primary interests include audio production. After the summer, she’ll begin pursuing a degree in Radio, Television and Film at the University of North Texas.

KRTS is celebrating their arrival this Friday evening with a reception from 5-7 p.m. at the Wine Bar at the Marfa Guest Quarters. The public is encouraged to come out, meet the new interns, and mingle with friends and neighbors. The Quarters has generously agreed to donate $1 from every glass of wine sold to KRTS. All proceeds will support public radio in Far West Texas. The Wine Bar at the Marfa Guest Quarters is located at 109 W. San Antonio Street in Marfa.
KRTS offers student internships on a quarterly basis. The application deadline for Fall 2009 internships is August 1. Interested persons are encouraged to contact the station or visit www.marfapublicradio.org for more information.

It might sound silly, but you can feel James Dean’s star power permeate this landmark fifty years after the fact. There is an ineffable glamor here that my video may not be able to capture. The only way to experience it is to visit yourself; stop by their website and make reservations so you can see what I’m talking about.
I want to give a big thank you to Vicki, Carlos Lujan and the rest of the staff at the Paisano Hotel and Jett’s Grill. This isn’t just a great place to stop by if you’re from out of town… they go out of their way to make a wonderful experience for the whole community. A perfect day in Marfa always ends with one of Jett’s excellent Margaritas while observing the sunset to the sound of the fountain in the courtyard.
They get my kudos because they are professional about providing excellent service. Even when every other restaurant in town in closed, you can get something to eat here. That is a community service, people!
Here’s a little history on the Paisano straight from the horse’s mouth:
The Hotel Paisano was built by Charles Bassett of El Paso and opened in June 1930. It was one of five hotels that he built in west Texas and eastern New Mexico of the Gateway Hotel chain. He commissioned notable architect Henry Trost of Trost and Trost in El Paso for the architectural design. The construction company was McKee Construction out of El Paso that had built most of the early Hilton Hotels around Texas in the 1920′s and 1930′s as well as most of the office buildings in downtown El Paso of that era. This press release finalizes this long process:
Alpine, TX, April 17, 2009 — It’s been awhile since it was last played in Alpine, back when the Boston Red Sox had an affiliate team here in the 1960s, but today pro baseball has returned to the Big Bend Region. An official announcement will be made on Monday at 10 a.m. at Kokernot Field, an appropriate venue since it was the late Herbert L.
